Audi A4: Rear Three-Point Seat Belt, Removing and Installing

Outer Rear Three-Point Seat Belt, Removing and Installing, Sedan

  Caution

This procedure contains mandatory replaceable parts. Refer to component overview and parts catalog prior to starting procedure.

Mandatory Replacement Parts

  • Bolt - Automatic Belt Retractor (If parts of the seat belt system are removed due to an accident, replace the belt system bolt)

Removing

  WARNING

Risk of injury due to involuntary deployment.

  • Pay attention to the safety precautions when working with pyrotechnic components. Refer to → Chapter "Safety Precautions when Working with Pyrotechnic Components".
  • Observe the disposal regulations for pyrotechnical components. Refer to → Chapter "Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units, Storing, Transporting and Disposing (Pyrotechnic Components)".

- Disconnect the battery ground cable with the ignition turned on. Refer to → Electrical Equipment; Rep. Gr.27; Battery; Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting.

- Remove the outer rear belt end fitting. Refer to → Chapter "Rear Outer Belt End Fitting, Removing and Installing".

- Remove the rear shelf. Refer to → Chapter "Rear Shelf, Removing and Installing".

- Remove the noise insulation for the automatic belt retractor.

- Remove the luggage compartment side trim panel. Refer to → Chapter "Luggage Compartment Side Trim Panel, Removing and Installing, Sedan".

- Remove the seat belt webbing -1- from the rear seat belt guide -3-.

- Guide the seat belt webbing over the seat belt guide ridge in the direction of -arrow- by lifting the C-pillar trim panel -2- slightly, and guide it out through the gap between the trim panel and seat belt guide.

  WARNING

Risk of injury due to involuntary deployment.

Before handling pyrotechnic components (For example, disconnecting the connector), the person handling it must "discharge static electricity". For example, this can be done by briefly touching the door striker.

- Disconnect the connector -3- by releasing the connector lock with a small screwdriver.

- Loosen the bolt -1- approximately seven turns.

- Push the three-point seat belt -2- toward the rear in the direction of -arrow-, disengage it from the mount and remove it.

Installing

  WARNING

  • Pay attention to the safety precautions when working with pyrotechnic components. Refer to → Chapter "Safety Precautions when Working with Pyrotechnic Components".
  • Before handling pyrotechnic components (For example, connecting a connector), the person handling it must "discharge static electricity". For example, this can be done by briefly touching the door striker.

- If parts of the seat belt system are removed due to an accident, replace the belt system bolts.

- Insert the three-point seat belt with the anti-twist mechanism and bolt -2- into the mount -3-.

- Push the three-point seat belt -1- all the way forward -arrow- and tighten the bolt at the same time.

  WARNING

Repairing pyrotechnic components (For example the airbag and seat belt tensioner) incorrectly increases the risk of injuries due to unintentional deployments when the battery is connected.

  • The ignition must be on when connecting the battery.
  • Make sure that no one is inside the vehicle at the time when the battery is connected.

- Connect the battery ground cable with the ignition switched on. Refer to → Electrical Equipment; Rep. Gr.27; Battery; Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting.

Further installation is the reverse order of removal.

Installation instructions: For example tightening specifications, replacing components. Refer to → Chapter "Overview - Outer Rear Three-Point Seat Belt".

Outer Rear Three-Point Seat Belt, Removing and Installing, Avant

  Caution

Mandatory Replacement Parts

  • Bolt - Automatic Belt Retractor to Body (Replace bolt if it was removed because of an accident when the seat belt was buckled)

Removing

  • Observe the disposal regulations for pyrotechnical components. Refer to → Chapter "Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units, Storing, Transporting and Disposing (Pyrotechnic Components)".

- Disconnect the battery ground cable with the ignition turned on. Refer to → Electrical Equipment; Rep. Gr.27; Battery; Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting.

- Remove the outer rear belt end fitting. Refer to → Chapter "Rear Outer Belt End Fitting, Removing and Installing".

- Remove the luggage compartment side trim panel. Refer to → Chapter "Luggage Compartment Side Trim Panel, Removing and Installing, Avant".

- Driver side: Remove the luggage compartment relay and fuse panel. Refer to → Electrical Equipment; Rep. Gr.97; Relay Panel, Fuse Panel, E-Boxes; Component Location Overview - Relay Panel, Fuse Panel, E-Boxes.

  WARNING

Risk of injury due to involuntary deployment.

- Disconnect the connector -2- by releasing the connector lock with a small screwdriver.

- Push the noise insulation to the side and loosen the bolt -1- approximately seven turns.

- Push the three-point seat belt -3- toward the rear in the direction of -arrow-, disengage it from the mount and remove it.

Installing

  • Before handling pyrotechnic components (For example, connecting a connector), the person handling it must "discharge static electricity". For example, this can be done by briefly touching the door striker.

- If parts of the seat belt system are removed due to an accident, replace the belt system bolts.

- Insert the three-point seat belt with the anti-twist mechanism and bolt -2- into the mount -3-.

- Push the three-point seat belt -1- all the way forward -arrow- and tighten the bolt at the same time.

  Note

  • Make sure the connectors are pushed in all the way and that they engage audibly.
  • Make sure the wires are not pinched.

  WARNING

  • The ignition must be on when connecting the battery.
  • Make sure that no one is inside the vehicle at the time when the battery is connected.

Installation is performed in reverse order of removal, noting the following:

Rear Three Point Seat Belt in Folding Backrest, Removing and Installing

  Caution

This procedure contains mandatory replaceable parts. Refer to component overview and parts catalog prior to starting procedure.

Mandatory Replacement Parts

  • Nut - Automatic Belt Retractor in Rear Seat Backrest to Body (Replace bolt if it was removed because of an accident when the seat belt was buckled)

Removing

- Remove the center rear belt end fitting. Refer to → Chapter "Rear Seat Belt Latch, Removing and Installing".

- Remove the right folding backrest. Refer to → Chapter "Rear Seat Backrest, Removing and Installing, Outer Folding Backrest".

- Remove the backrest seat cover and cushion. Refer to → Chapter "Cover and Cushion, Removing and Installing, Folding Backrest".

- Remove the nut -1-.

- Disengage the three-point seat belt -2- and remove it.

- Guide out the seat belt -3-.

Installing

- If parts of the seat belt system are removed due to an accident, replace the belt system bolts.

- Insert the three-point seat belt with the anti-twist mechanism in the mount and tighten the nut.

Further installation is the reverse order of removal.

Rear Three Point Seat Belt in Rear Shelf, Removing and Installing

  Caution

This procedure contains mandatory replaceable parts. Refer to component overview and parts catalog prior to starting procedure.

Mandatory Replacement Parts

  • Bolt - Automatic Belt Retractor in Rear Shelf to Rear Shelf (Replace bolt if it was removed because of an accident when the seat belt was buckled)

Removing

- Remove the fixed rear seat backrest. Refer to → Chapter "Rear Seat Backrest, Removing and Installing, Fixed Rear Seat Backrest".

- Remove the center rear belt end fitting. Refer to → Chapter "Rear Seat Belt Latch, Removing and Installing".

- Remove the rear shelf. Refer to → Chapter "Rear Shelf, Removing and Installing".

- Loosen the bolt -2- approximately seven turns.

- Disengage the three-point seat belt -1--arrow- and remove it upward.

Installing

- If parts of the seat belt system are removed due to an accident, replace the belt system bolts.

- Push the three-point seat belt -1- all the way forward -arrow- and tighten the bolt at the same time.

Further installation is the reverse order of removal.
